Early adopters running the testing builds of the most advanced version of Chrome have a new update available, designed to fix an issue which impacted the reliability of the browser. Google Chrome 5.0.356.2 is up for grabs through the Dev channel and is designed to fix an issue in which tabs get frozen when users perform dragging actions. At this point in time, the Mountain View-based search giant released 5.0.356.2 not only for Windows, but also for Mac OS X and Linux.
“We have released Google Chrome 5.0.356.2 to the Dev channel on Windows and Mac to fix an issue where dragging anything with your mouse would freeze the tab,” revealed Mark Larson, Google Chrome Team. According to Larson, there are no additional issues resolved with the latest Dev channel release of Chrome.
When the bug was reported, the steps necessary to reproduce the issue were also described. “Load any webpage. Select content. Try to drag it somewhere. Page locks up and becomes unresponsive to user input from that point on,” reads an entry on the Chromium development project.
The past week has been quite busy for Google, with no less than three refreshes shipped through the Dev channel. In addition, the Mountain View company also pushes Chrome 4.1 out of Beta and into the Stable channel delivering it to all Windows users. Unlike the Dev releases, Chrome 4.1 is available exclusively to users of Windows.
The minor update to version 4.0 released earlier this year paves the way to the version 5.0 of Chrome. When it introduced the first Beta development milestone of Chrome 4.1, Google emphasized that the update to 4.0 was designed to introduce features initially planned for v5, namely the Translate infobar and new privacy options. Users that are not comfortable with pre-release software should not run the Dev channel release of Chrome 5.0, but should instead stick with version 4.1.
